Debugging Cisco Serial Links:
  1. The interface is up/down on both sides.
  2. From one side we see the following when we debug PPP:
    Feb 21 06:26:35: Hs2/0 PPP: I pkt type 0xC021, datagramsize 18

If we switch the link to HDLC, we see:
    Feb 21 07:02:47: Hssi2/0: HDLC myseq 997, mineseen 0*, yourseen 1003, line up
    Feb 21 07:02:48: Hssi2/0: Reset from PC 0x600E7F2C
    Feb 21 07:02:48: Hssi2/0: HDLC myseq 998, mineseen 0*, yourseen 1004, line up
    Feb 21 07:02:49: Hssi2/0: Reset from PC 0x600E7EE8
    Feb 21 07:02:49: Hssi2/0: HDLC myseq 999, mineseen 0*, yourseen 1005, line down
    Feb 21 07:02:50: Hssi2/0: HDLC myseq 1000, mineseen 0*, yourseen 1006, line up

  3. Notice how we're seeing inbound packets, responding to them, but we don't get an acknowledgement (Timout ACKsent in PPP, mineseen 0 in HDLC). This means we have a problem either with the transmit at the end with the above debug, or with the receive at the other end.
  4. Use loopbacks to determine where the problem is equipment-wise.
  5. Find out that one of your DL3800s is not switching completely over to HSSI.
  6. Remove DL3800, abandon it to the feral chipmunks in New Bloomfield.

Martin Pool and the GnuKeyring guys have kept a good thing going. The 1.2.1 version is pretty slick. One thing is that when you select the distinct password font, gnukeyring doesn't use the password font in the notes field. One quick one line fix later, and that little annoyance has been fixed. To enable it, you need to have the "Use keyring font" checked in preferences.

Last night, I experienced a night terror. This is the first one that I've ID'd as a night terror, but I may have had them earlier and just thought they were extremely vivid nightmares. I was woken up by the girl sleeping next to me, she kept tossing and turning and kicking in her sleep, but what woke me up was that she was grasping my hands. She was squeezing my left hand, but the problem was that she was bending my right pinkie finger back to the breaking point. But although I felt awake, things were moving really slowly. I could feel her next to me, breathing in shallow breaths. The breathing finally scared me enough to fully wake me up, and I looked to my right, feeling that I'd be looking at a girl, and I was really happy no one was there as I was able to dispel the feeling that there was someone lying right next to me.

It happened about an hour after I went to bed (at 4am thanks to the DL3800), but happily, I was able to sleep pretty easily afterwards. Granted, I'm sure stuff like this has helped spread the belief in ghosts, as I felt awake and my senses seemed to be working fine (the only giveaway was the rate at which things occurred).
