People were unhappy with the Vigilantrix episode of Billions s05e07, calling it a "stupid plot device", and worse.
It turns out that fiction again has had the last laugh, with nootropics as one of the possible proximate causes of FTX's demise. 1
We can rely on the brutality of markets to pointedly show when an edge has been lost. Refusing to accept that reality can make for steep losses, such as FTX's. Of course, the notion of an 'edge' does not only apply to markets. One's ability to plan routes and drive cars defensively is an edge that allows for faster transport. The same goes for decision-making in fluid situations. The problem is that these edges erode with age.
How do we detect loss of edge and wind those practices down?
It seems quite painful and costly to run this correctly. For example, people will have annual physical checkups. When people fail a physical and they *know* that they are well, they will seek out a physician who will just sign off. It seems that there needs to be a pre-commitment to a set of doctors and lawyers who have strong audit practices.
Or one can punt on the problem of detecting edge loss and voluntarily commit to lower levels of autonomy earlier. Granted, this has all the terrors of Odysseus and no Siren songs to look forward to. 2
It is then no surprise that almost everyone just rolls the dice and leaves senescence unmanaged.
